Festivals in Sheffield

By Faith Kerekes

There are numerous festivals in Sheffield throughout the year. This list is by no means comprehensive, it is only a taste of what the city has to offer!

Music

The first type of festival which probably springs into the mind of most of us! Sheffield is the home to our very own Tramlines festival. Held in July, music takes over the city for one weekend. With the lineup this year including the likes of M.O and the Libertines, there really is something for everyone!

If you are looking to hear music from the classic greats, then you can head over to Sheffield’s fake festival. This festival really lives up to its name, with tribute bands galore. Queen and Oasis tributes can be found here this spring!

Food and Drink

Odes to our sustenance in this great city are numerous. Sheffield food festival in May lets you sample local foods right in the heart of the city. Meanwhile, tastes from around the world can be sampled at the University’s very own World Food festival, also taking place in May. Something about May seems to signal food time in this city! The University of Sheffield Students’ Union also has its very own beer and cider festival. 100 ales available to try!

If you are a vegan, you will definitely fit into this leafy, green city. The Sheffield vegan festival, which started last year is due to return this summer. Lots of eye opening talks and vegan produce for sale.

Films

If you are a fan of sampling life from the viewpoints and realities of other people, Sheffield Documentary festival is for you. The greatest documentary festival in the UK is one where the business of making documentaries is mixed with the pleasure of watching them. During these 5 days of June your mind has the possibility to be entrenched deep in thought, whilst picking out what to watch out of the amazing titles on offer. There is an opportunity for networking with those who make documentaries and inspire ideas behind them.

Is adventure more your thing? Worry not! The Sheffield adventure film festival is the one after your own heart. Held in Sheffield’s famous independent cinema, these adrenaline pumping films are not to be missed.

Thinking

Festival of the Mind is the work of Sheffield University and Sheffield’s “creative and cultural talent”. It is about presenting cutting edge research at the University and discussing pressing global issues such as food production.

Sport

Meanwhile not strictly a festival, Varsity is the sports event of the year. The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University compete in a series of matches in most sports imaginable. At the end of the games, one University is crowned as varsity champion. Varsity days are very exciting, both to play for your team and to cheer your University on! Aside from the two Universities, The English Institute of Sport also hosts the Sheffield Athletics championship.
